Event description

The Ma & Morley Scholarship Program and the Ma & Morley Ambassadors are hosting a panel of influential individuals who are leading the way on climate action in their communities. The panel will focus on what individuals can do in their daily lives to create positive change for the climate and will be followed by a Q&A session with the audience. Refreshments will be provided on the night.

We will be joined on the night by an incredible panel, which includes:

  • MC: Minerva Bailey, 2020 Scholar and Ambassador who works in the circular economy, waste and resource management as a consultant at Rawtec.
  • Caroline Pidcock: Caroline Pidcock was born in Grafton, land of the Gumbaynggir Nation, and raised in Sydney, land of the Eora Nation, and has been shaped by this Country, especially their mighty water systems. She is passionate about architecture, biophilia and regenerative design, and how she can joyfully co-create “socially just, culturally rich and ecologically restorative” ways of living in Australia. Her authentic interest and experience in these approaches has been developed and enhanced through her involvement in a diverse range of professional, academic and community commitments. Since starting her own practice in 1992, Caroline and her team have creatively shown how the many issues that are fundamental to sustainability can be potent and profound influences as they designed, documented and oversaw the construction of many delightful and restorative places. After 26 years of running her own successful architectural practice, 2018 saw Caroline transition PIDCOCK to a sole person practice, to enable a more agile way of working and focus on how to strategically accelerate the creation of the abundant living future we urgently need. In addition to her own practice, other roles Caroline currently enjoys include being Chair of 1 Million Women; Member of the AIA Climate Action and Sustainability Taskgroup; Chair of the AIA Environment Design Guide Advisory Group; member of the Sydney Olympic Park Authority Design Review Panel and Northern Beaches Design + Sustainability Advisory Panel. She is a sought after speaker and teaches at a range of universities in NSW.
  • Charlotte McCabe: Charlotte is a Greens Councillor (Ward 2) for the City of Newcastle and has contributed to environment campaigns across the country on issues such as uranium, logging, coal and gas and environment laws. She has worked as a primary school teacher in Victoria, the NT and NSW and as a community organiser for the Wilderness Society. Charlotte's been a spokesperson for her local resident group on coal dust, ammonium nitrate and planning issues, and has been a board member of the Worimi Conservation Lands for five years.
  • Uncle Paul Gordon: Paul Gordon is a Ngemba man, born at Brewarrina, and he grew up on the Barwon River in north western New South Wales. Uncle Paul has dedicated his life to teaching, and connecting with other Lore men and women throughout Australia and working with communities throughout Australia to support learnings and connecting our stories through lore and culture. For the past 15 years, he has been leading camps and workshops for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people to reconnect to culture and share. Uncle Paul has experience leading business enterprises and has held senior positions in training and economic development organisations. He has developed a unique leadership model which integrates cultural values into personal behaviour and business practices. As a traditional knowledge holder and custodian of Aboriginal Lore throughout Australia, he continues to share as part of his cultural responsibilities and obligations to carry on thousands of years of ongoing culture. He recently guided the 2020 Scholars on an 11-day on-country immersion through western NSW.
  • Professor Tim Roberts: Tim Roberts is currently Emeritus Professor of Biology in the School of Life Sciences at the University of Newcastle. He continues to be active in research and has published some 130 papers. Originally from South Australia, he has travelled extensively since completing his B Sc at the University of Adelaide and his PhD at Flinders University, coming to the University of Newcastle in 1974 and moving to Singapore in July 2006 to set up the University of Newcastle campus in Singapore. He returned to Newcastle as Conjoint Professor to pursue his research until asked to take over the Tom Farrell Institute Directorship in 2010. Tim Roberts is also an education consultant with experience in offshore campus development and control, alumni, and postgraduate education. He has led four New Colombo Plan student excursions to Indonesian Borneo.

About the Ma & Morley Scholarship Program:

The Ma & Morley Scholarship Program is a transformative experience offered to students of the University of Newcastle who want to change the world. The Program commenced in 2018 and aims to inspire, educate and cultivate the next generation of globally aware and socially conscious Australian leaders.

Once Scholars graduate from their undergraduate degree, they become Ma & Morley Ambassadors. The aim of the Ambassador Program is to continue the Ambassadors’ leadership journey, grow their awareness and consciousness, keep them connected to each other, the Program and the university, while offering opportunities to hear from, and connect with, leaders who align with the program’s values.
