MACBUREAU is a new radical adaptation of Shakespeare's famous tragedy MACBETH.

A campus is in crisis. Set in a contemporary broadly Australian university setting, in the midst of rising academic tensions and burgeoning solidarity movements, one prominent professor makes an ambitious yet ill-fated choice when the opportunity for power arises, at the urging of her wife and the disdain of her union comrades. Protestors, students, workers, teachers, this is a play for those who want more, who want for better, for what is right. This is a semi-educational workplace tragicomedy about university culture, the all-encompassing nature of power, and toxic lesbians.

Written by Claire Le Blond, co-directed with Narii Hamill Salmon, this adaptation follows the recent pattern of MUSC having new spins and queer twists. This project has been designed to critique the Australian tertiary bureaucratic hierarchy as well as represent key elements of university culture such as student solidarity, queer relationships, and getting coffee on campus at your favourite cafe. Themes such as bureaucracy, gender, neoliberalism, the deconstruction of "girlboss" feminism, and more can be found in the seats of the Guild Theatre, Unimelb Parkville campus.

CONTENT WARNINGS:

Coarse language, performed violence, performed alcohol consumption, references to death, brief sexual references including a singular reference to sexual violence, loud and oppressive sound, intense lighting sequences and low level audience interaction.
