Macquarie University Arts After Dark - VIP Event for High School Students - Geography and Planning
Description
Macquarie University Arts After Dark presents: VIP Event for High School Students - Geography and Planning
Enjoy Geography, Community and Family Studies, or Society and Culture? Come to our special event for high school students as part of the Arts After Dark Series.
About the event: One place, many stories: come along to Wallamuttagal Campus, Macquarie University, to immerse yourself in the many stories that weave together to make a shared place. We'll walk from the recently redesigned centre of the campus, down to the reconstructed creek, pause at the Learning Circle, look at artworks that form the Sculpture Garden, and circle back through new student housing. As we walk, we'll stop at key points to think about the different stories that co-exist that collectively make the university a place for many. We'll use a placemaking lens to read changes to the landscape and the built environment, drawing out connections between high school geography and urban and regional planning. Throughout the walk, we'll develop a sense of place to highlight the possibilities of storytelling in urban planning, and to build and compare different stories of a place.
Location: 12 Wally’s Walk, Macquarie University Wallumattagal Campus, NSW 2109.
Date: Wednesday 27 May
Time: 5:00pm - 6:00pm. (Prior to the Arts After Dark event)

About Arts After Dark
ARTS AFTER DARK | Beyond the build: Rethinking the housing crisis
Wednesday 27 May 2026, 5.45pm - 8pm
12 Wally’s Walk, Macquarie University Wallumattagal Campus
Housing is dominating public conversation, and in a cost-of-living crisis it’s easy to see why.
When it comes to the question of how to solve a housing crisis, the default response can often be to “just build more houses”. But what does focusing only on volume and affordability actually cost our communities?
Join us for this dynamic discussion to unpack why creating liveable places goes beyond just bricks and mortar, with the keynote address delivered by Professor Kristian Ruming, Co-Director of the Macquarie University Housing and Urban Research Centre. Professor Ruming will be joined by subject matter experts from across the Faculty of Arts to explore how supply-driven planning is playing out on the ground, and reflect on how decisions shape our cities’ communities and shared spaces by asking:
Where do affordability, sustainability, community, and everyday liveability collide – and does a holistic solution exist?
Why has building more houses become the main solution to the housing crisis?
How can planning reflect the diversity of how people live and connect to place, as well as the unique housing barriers they face?
