Event description

Melbourne based artists Madeline Leman and Ruby Jones join forces for a night of 70s inspired pop, rock n roll and americana music.

Madeline Leman & The Desert Swells will take you on a trip through 60s surf, 70s pop, and their unique brand of ‘Femmericana’ twang. Influenced by the women of the 60s and 70s, Madeline captivates audiences with stories of strong female protagonists who ramble their way through the mundane and the profound. Featuring lush vocal harmonies, playful storytelling and pop hooks, The Desert Swells are hard to tie down but easy to love. Since their debut LP release 'Nobody's Fool', the band have been featured at Out On The Weekend, Reservoir Stomp and Leaps and Bounds. In 2021 the band released their follow up single ‘This is Living' and are currently back in the studio working on their much anticipated sophomore album.

Ruby Jones

Rapture, rebirth and kaleidoscopic desert dreamscapes etched across the undersides of her eyelids: Ruby Jones is ready and willing to take communion with the ghosts of her past.

Blending Jones’ searing vocals with the kind of washed out, psychedelia-steeped sonic palette that pulls the heat from your fingertips, Jones’ tempestuous brand of bliss is uniquely her own. Melbourne born and bred, she cut her teeth on the local scene before recording and touring internationally with Clairy Browne & The Bangin’ Rackettes. It was here she met her lead guitarist and songwriting partner Jules Pascoe (Husky, Jazz Party, Jaala). After the group’s dispansion in 2015, Jones and Pascoe delved deep into a rich back catalogue of songwriting, and alongside bassist, Joel Loukes (Riley Catherall) and drummer, Selwyn Cozens (Buttered Loaf) conjured new work teeming with themes of heartbreak, loss and redemption.

The band released their debut album The Woman Who Loves You in November 2021 to critical acclaim after penning a publishing deal with Gaga Music. The Woman Who Loves You (single) was recognised in the Fuse Darebin Songwriters award, a sure sign of the momentum being gained by one of Melbourne’s most exciting new outfits.
