Description

This is your opportunity to experience some of the gems of Mahurangi West, the new trails set up in the regional park at Te Muri, Sullivan’s Bay and further, if time permits. The picturesque bays and headlands of Mahurangi Harbour, commanding views of the Hauraki Gulf and a rich vein of Māori and early settler history make this a popular walk.

We have had to come up with a new route this year, the consequence of Mahurangi West Road being closed to all but residents following slips earlier in the year. The bus will drop us in the Te Muri Regional Park and we start walking on the downward sloping ridge to Te Muri Beach and the old joint Māori/Pakeha cemetery.

From there we head to the Te Muri stream which we ford – the tide will be low but expect to get your feet wet feet so bring a towel. On the north side we will do a loop taking in Cudlip Point, Sullivan’s Bay and further to Mita Bay, if time permits. Then we double back, somewhat inland, re-cross the stream and complete a circuit of the Te Muri Park with views at the south end across to Wenderholm.

There may be a chance of a swim so bring your togs and take the opportunity to cool off.

We'll take our time and enjoy the views, and stop for snacks, lunch and stories along the way – there's no rush. On this walk there are some stretches of uneven ground across paddocks and a couple of steep hills to negotiate.

This walk has great variety of beaches, headlands, bush and stunning vistas. We'll look forward to showing you around.
