Description

MAKE ME BETTER MA is an autobiographical coming-of-age theatre work by Jazz Zhao, built from the journals she kept between 2012 and 2022, addressed to an imaginary friend - a cat called Milo.

Structured around the three rules her mother told her never to break - don't do drugs, don’t sell your body, don’t get pregnant - it moves between humour and darkness as a young woman finds her way out from under her mother's expectations.

Across two weeks in November, Jazz returns to the work with director Chelsea August and dramaturg and cultural safety advisor Katrina Irawati Graham, testing new material alongside lighting, sound and the bilingual Mandarin and English layers of the script. The residency closes with a showing of selected scenes.

Presented through BEMAC's 2026 Liminal World program, the showings are an invitation to see a new work in the making and share your response with the artists as it moves toward full production.

Audience feedback from these showings will help shape the next draft.
