Community Event: Advance Care Planning Workshop

National Advance Care Planning Week | 17–23 March

Now is the ideal time to have a conversation with the people who matter most to you—including your healthcare providers—about what’s important to you and make sure your treatment preferences are understood and respected.

Join Palliative Care Tasmania and special guests for a workshop designed to help you start important conversations about advance care planning. Together, we’ll cover practical tips for talking with family, friends, colleagues, and healthcare providers, while also helping you understand what matters most to someone during the end-of-life phase.

Workshop Details:

Date & Time: 21 March, 2:30 PM – 4:30 PM

Location: St Lukes, 72 Elizabeth Street, Hobart

Duration: 120 minutes

Cost: Free for Tasmanians

Refreshments: Light refreshments will be provided for afternoon tea

Format: In-person workshop

In this workshop, you'll explore the basics of advance care planning and gain the tools to have important conversations including:

Consumer Voice: Hear a personal story from someone who has lived the experience.
What matters most to you: Reflect on your personal values, beliefs and care preferences.
Starting the conversation: Practical tips for talking about your wishes with family, friends and health professionals.
The advance care planning process: Learn how to document your wishes for the future.
Legal tools: Understand substitute decision-making and enduring guardianship.
Tasmanian Advance Care Directive: How to fill out this form to record your wishes.

Why Attend? By attending this workshop, you’ll be equipped with the skills to approach important conversations with care and compassion. You’ll learn how to express your own values and wishes clearly and understand how to honour the wishes of those you care about. These conversations are essential to ensuring everyone’s end-of-life preferences are respected—and that our community can provide the most compassionate care possible.

Who Can Attend? This workshop is open to everyone in the community. No prior training or experience in health or palliative care is required. We welcome anyone interested in learning more about these important conversations.

Interactive & Supportive: This is an interactive session, with opportunities to engage in activities, reflections, and group discussions. We encourage your participation to ensure you get the most from the experience. This workshop will explore sensitive topics related to death, dying, and grief. We recognise that these conversations can be emotional, and our team is here to support you. You can participate at your own pace, and we will connect you with support services if needed.

What You’ll Get: You’ll receive a resource pack to take home, including a Tasmanian Advance Care Directive and other important documents to support your advance care planning conversations.
