Making Worlds Workshop with Stuart Orr
Description
All stories happen in a world a writer has created. Sometimes their world closely resembles our own, but shows it to us from a new perspective. Sometimes we are taken by the writer's imagination to a realm so strange it challenges our understanding of the most fundamental aspects of ourselves and our reality.
In this workshop you will learn the guiding rules for building worlds of science fiction, fantasy, supernatural and historical fiction.
For each genre, you will be prompted to create an artifact, something which belongs to each new place – a map, a relic, an invention. These literary items will be the grit around which pearls of ideas can develop. By the end of the workshop, you will have built the foundations of a world from whose soil – be it alien, haunted, ancient or enchanted – will grow a wealth of characters and stories.
Suitable for ages 12–18 years (but 18+ also welcome)
