General Practitioners (GPs) and other primary healthcare providers are the main coordinating point for addressing the health needs of women with experiences of non-fatal strangulation and sexual choking. In the last 12 months, new Australian research has revealed that strangulation results in worse cognitive outcomes than intimate partner violence alone.

Drawing from experience gained in the women’s health sector supporting women with experiences of strangulation, sexual choking, and brain injury, in this webinar, Women’s Health NSW and Dr Wei-May Su (RACGP) will use a case study and practice-based examples to emphasise the important role healthcare providers play. It will support GPs and other primary healthcare providers to identify, screen for, and address the short- and long-term needs of women who experience strangulation or engage in sexual choking.

This webinar is geared towards GPs and other primary healthcare providers; however, it is a valuable evidence and practice update for all service providers who play a role in healthcare, including women’s health, domestic, family and sexual violence, and community service providers who work with women.

Our guest speaker, Dr Wei-May Su, will provide practical advice on implementing training insights into GP practice.

Dr Wei-May Su

Dr Wei-May Su is an academic GP and GP supervisor with specific interests in complex care, mental health, abuse and violence and neurodiversity. She is the Chair of the RACGP Specific Interests Abuse and Violence in Families, and a PhD candidate on the use of interpersonal violence.
