What is a good thread count for quilt covers?

Generally people tend to look at thread count in terms of sheets. And quality wise it can be a bit deceptive. Thread count has been all the rage in terms of sheets and for covers to hit the 1000 thread count mark. This just means a higher number of threads per square metre in a weave. But what that also then means is that it’s a thicker product so it might not be that ideal all year round. If you're looking at a thousand threads count in a square metre of cotton, it is a natural fibre but it would be heavier on you in the summer months.

So thread count might not necessarily indicate quality, you're right. What happens there is, in order to bring the price down, sometimes suppliers will market a cotton-rich sheet set meaning that you'd have cotton and polyester prices blended. By doing this you're still achieving the 1000 thread count that people are looking for, but the price is reduced. People might really need to take into consideration that in these cotton-rich sheets, you're getting this heavy sheet set that also has polyester in it. So it’s definitely not ideal for summer.

How many quilt covers should you own?

So personally I have two for my personal bed and also for my daughters bed and that's purely just based on function. So when it’s time to wash the quilt cover, I don’t want to have to be waiting around for this thing to dry or if there is an accident or anything like that. So I just want to switch it straight out with the spare. You could also look at having a quilt cover and quilt for your winter colder month plus a coverlet for your summer months.

Superking Quilt covers

So thread count is important for quilt covers, but not as relevant as the sheets, which is good to clarify. In terms of super king quilt covers, can you explain how these are used in styling, it’s not just in relation to having a large bed. A lot of people use it, you know, for overhang and so forth on smaller beds?

It’s not just relevant to super king either. So generally in store, we would recommend for our customers to go up a size in their quilt cover no matter what sizes they are. So if you are in a queen size bed you should go up to a king size. This is for a couple of reasons for doing this and it’s specific to the person. So if you had a bed that's just sat directly on the floor and you didn’t need that overhang then you would probably re-think going up a size. But generally we have these high pillow-top mattresses, sometimes they're top and bottom pillow-top, so you're getting, a 60cm wall of mattress showing. So the hang from the standard size is not enough to cover your mattress. Or if it is, once you jump in the bed or you put two bodies on the bed it rises up and you're getting these drafts at night from the side or down the middle. So this bigger size whether it is superking on a king or king on a queen etc, will solve or alleviate this problem.
