Event description

Mandarin Grandparents Group (Social & English learning)

Mondays| 9.30amam – 10:30am | $15 per session ($135 per 9-week term)
First session is free – come and try! Grandchildren welcome.

This weekly program is specially designed for Mandarin-speaking grandparents who have moved from China—either permanently or temporarily—to support their children in raising grandchildren in Australia.

Whether you're here helping care for little ones or just recently settled, this group is for you. We understand the challenges and joys of life in a new country, and we’ve created a warm, culturally safe space for grandparents to come together, stay active, build friendships, and learn practical English for everyday living in Melbourne.

What to Expect Each Week:

  • 🧘‍♀️ Gentle Tai Chi & Stretching
Each session begins with 10 minutes of calming movement practices to support physical health, flexibility, and wellbeing.

  • 🗣️ Everyday English for Australian Life
Learn practical, conversational English tailored to real-life situations—like how to shop at the fruit and vegetable market, order coffee, or use a Myki card on public transport. Sessions are interactive and fun, using role-play, conversation, and games to build confidence.

  • 🧺 Real-World Excursions
During the term, we’ll take a group trip to the local Ashburton market to practice English skills in a real-life setting, supported by our friendly facilitator.

  • Social Time in a Welcoming Environment
Enjoy free tea, coffee, and biscuits in a relaxed setting where you can chat with others, make friends, and feel part of the community.

Who Runs the Sessions?

The group is facilitated by Lin Guo, a bilingual Mandarin and English speaker who holds a Master of Education (TESOL – Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). Born in China and now based in Melbourne, Lin deeply understands the cultural background, language needs, and lived experience of Chinese migrants in Australia.

Bringing Grandchildren?

Children are welcome to attend with their grandparents. While the sessions are not designed for children, we provide a range of toys and quiet activities in the same space to help little ones stay occupied, so grandparents can participate in the group with ease and peace of mind.
