Throughout history, our people have been known by many names, Assyrian, Chaldean, Syriac, Aramean and others. But what do these names mean, where did they come from, and what can history tell us about the people behind them?

Join us for Many Names, One People?, a special lecture presented by Dr Nicholas Al-Jeloo, exploring the historical development of the names and identities associated with our people across different periods, regions and traditions.

Drawing on historical, linguistic and cultural evidence, Dr Al-Jeloo will examine how these names emerged and evolved, how they have been used by communities themselves and by outsiders, and what they reveal about questions of identity, continuity and shared heritage.

Rather than viewing terminology only through the lens of modern debates, this lecture invites audiences to step back and examine the broader historical record, providing context for understanding the different names that have shaped, and continue to shape, our community.

The evening will also provide an opportunity for attendees to engage with Dr Al-Jeloo and explore one of the most enduring and frequently discussed questions concerning our collective identity.
