Mapping the political economy of planning
Description
Planning is shaped by the interaction of economic interests, the power these have over state institutions and decision-makers, and the ability of communities to push back. This dinner conversation organised by the People's Plan for Footscray will explore how different interests and actors in Victoria influence and shape land, resources, and development outcomes.
Maggie Cook will outline the basic regulatory and political environment, and raise questions about why cities often prioritise “regeneration” projects that align with property market interests rather than communities.
This is the first of a series of People's Plan Dinner Conversations exploring how we might democratise urban decision-making, provide collective goods, and protect vulnerable communities.
