Event description

MARCH Dunedin Game Dev Meetup - The Balancing Act of UX Design

Join us for our MARCH Meetup where we'll be joined by special guest, Stef Peacock, Senior UX/UI Designer at Runaway Play.

** PLEASE NOTE: CHANGE OF VENUE + WEDNESDAY NIGHT ** O Block at Otago Polytechnic, 112 Anzac Avenue (door access Leith River end)

The Balancing Act of UX Design

The coolest game mechanic in the world can still suck if it has a bad user experience (UX). Good UX makes for more engaging and accessible games. But what even is that? And how do we balance good UX design and practice with … well, making the rest of the game?

There’s already so much to juggle and consider when making games, especially when working in a small team. In this talk Stef will give a non-exhaustive but hopefully helpful, overview of UX Design (UX), why it’s so essential, and how to fit it into developing your games. Whether you're a UX Specialist, designer, or just wanting to make better games, this talk will give you actionable advice for your toolbox.

About Stef Peacock

Stef is an Ōtepoti (Dunedin) based Senior UX/UI Designer at Runaway Play, where he primarily works on existing live games and new products. Most recently he led the UX/UI on Honey Grove but throughout his time at Runaway he has contributed to marketing and design on a range of their games as well as the studio brand itself.

Prior to Runaway, Stef has also worked in a variety of different mediums; designing and creating content for mixed reality apps, interactive installations, and exhibition experiences. He previously also led the creative direction of the New Zealand Games Festival, maintaining and championing their recognisable and playful brand. Stef has taken a somewhat winding journey career-wise but has a passion for making accessible, fun and meaningful experiences and supporting others making their own experiences.
