"Nominated for a Grammy, he has toured with many world-renowned artists, including Paquito D’Rivera" - All About Jazz
Born in Rio de Janeiro, Marcos Silva is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger, and Grammy-nominated educator whose music is a living bridge between Brazil's rich musical heritage and the improvisational spirit of jazz. For decades he has performed on stages across Europe, the Americas, and Asia, bringing with him a sound rooted in the lush rhythms and harmonies of his homeland while embracing the full breadth of the jazz tradition.
Silva served as musical director for legendary vocalist Flora Purim and percussionist Airto Moreira for over two decades, a role that placed him at the center of some of the most celebrated Brazilian jazz of that era. He has written arrangements for Dizzy Gillespie's band and, in a remarkable testament to his stature, was chosen to replace the late Gil Evans as arranger and co-composer of Airto's Missa Espiritual, which he conducted and recorded with a 63-piece orchestra and choir in Cologne, Germany.
He has toured and collaborated with a who's-who of world music royalty, including Paquito D'Rivera, Bud Shank, and Dori Caymmi, and his original compositions and arrangements have been recorded by artists such as Herbie Mann, Toninho Horta, Romero Lubambo, and New York's Trio da Paz. His 2019 album Brasil From Head to Toe — his first new recording in 30 years — features all original compositions and serves as a vivid showcase of his singular creative voice.
For three decades, Silva has poured his energy into spreading the gospel of Brazilian music, playing a remarkable role in the San Francisco Bay Area's emergence as a thriving outpost of Brazilian jazz. He heads the Brazilian Music Department at the California Jazz Conservatory in Berkeley and was nominated for the Grammy Foundation and The Recording Academy's inaugural Music Educator Award in 2013. His performance at the winery this summer promises an evening of extraordinary musicianship, warmth, and the irresistible pulse of Brazil.
