Marianna and Zoltan
Description
Cantoris are excited to announce our second concert of 2026: Marianna and Zoltan!
Join us for an afternoon of dramatic and deeply contrasting choral music as we bring together two remarkable works by composers separated by time, place and musical style.
Marianna Martinez was a contemporary of Mozart whose compositions have recently been rediscovered. Her Dixit Dominus, set to Psalm 110, is joyful, melodic, and full of energy.
In stark contrast, Zoltan Kodály’s Missa Brevis was composed while he and his family were forced to take refuge in the cellar of the Budapest Opera House during heavy bombardment in 1945. Kodály’s composition captures the brooding melancholy of Hungary after World War Two.
Together, these two works offer a striking musical contrast, where you will be taken on a journey through the joy of eighteenth-century Vienna to the haunting sounds of twentieth-century Hungary.
We cannot wait to perform these pieces for you!
