    Join award-winning marimba soloist MACHI ISHIDA (石田真知) all the way from Hiroshima, JAPAN for a relaxing afternoon of world-class marimba music with her Australia-first solo recital right here in Boorloo (Perth)!

    ABOUT MACHI

    Machi is a true world champion of marimba performance, with her long list of solo and ensemble international awards including:

    • 1st Prize, Audience Award and Best Performance Award, 2022 World Marimba Competition (Stuttgart, Germany)
    • 4th Prize and Best Performance Award, 2021 Universal Marimba Competition (Bruges, Belgium)
    • 1st Prize (Duo/Trio Category as 'Marimba Twins'), 2019 Swiss Percussion Competition (Weinfelden, Switzerland)
    • 2nd Prize, 2017 Taiwan International Percussion Convention Competition (TIPCC) (Taipei, Taiwan)

    Machi's solo debut here comes just months after having toured East Asia with Taiwanese percussion duo Twincussion, performing to sold out audiences in Taipei's Eslite Performance Hall, Yilan's I-Lan Performance Hall, Hiroshima's Elisabeth University and Tokyo's Yamaha Ginza Hall.

    Join MACHI ISHIDA and guest artist ADAM TAN for a solo and duo program depicting Machi's personal stories, expressed through a 1-hour program of exciting marimba repertoire:

    BIOGRAPHIES OF THE ARTISTS

    MACHI ISHIDA(she/her) is a Japanese marimbist and percussionist based in Hiroshima, Japan. Machi has experienced marimba since the age of 9, receiving 1st Prize, Audience Award and the Best Performance Award at the Stuttgart World Marimba Competition (2022), making her the first person to win three awards at one time. Machi has also received prizes in other world-class competitions, including 4th Prize and Best Performance Award at the Belgium Universal Marimba Competition (2021), 2nd Prize at the Taiwan International Percussion Convention Competition (TIPCC) (2017), and the Espoir Award in the general duo category of the Osaka International Music Competition at the age of 12 (2005). 

    Machi regularly performs around the world, having performed in Austria, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Japan, Mongolia, Taiwan and the United States. Highlights including a masterclass at the Royal Danish Academy of Music (RDAM), a concert, ‘Ballade’ with Tanel-Eiko Novikov at the RDAM Percussion Hall, featuring as soloist in Edition Svitzer’s music videos for Adam Tan’s ‘LEVEL100’ and Heng Liu’s ‘When I Think Of You’, and masterclasses and recitals with Adam Tan at the University of Memphis, Arkansas State University, Middle Tennessee State University and University of North Alabama. Machi also performed 100 concerts per year in Japan as a member of the Hiroshima Junior Marimba Ensemble for five years.

    Machi is also a member of Marimba Twins, a percussion duo with her twin sister Maho Ishida. Marimba Twins has given numerous performances and six duo recitals since their debut in 2012, receiving 1st Prize in the Duo/Trio Category of the Swiss Percussion Competition (2019). Marimba Twins has expanded to provide educational projects for thousands of elementary and middle school students across Japan.

    Machi has a Bachelor of Music Culture Education from Hiroshima University, a master in percussion from Elisabeth University of Music (Japan), after which she studied at the Conservatoire de Strasbourg (France) for a specialist degree, graduating with the highest honours. Machi studied with Emmanuel Séjourné, Hironori Ogawa, Momoko Kamiya, Sumiko Sato and Thomas Vandevenne. Machi is also a scholarship recipient of the Hiroshima Peace Creation Fund, and continues to explore her other passions of percussion such as darabuka, tombak, riq, and daf. Machi is an Adams Artist (Netherlands), Kolberg Mallets Artist (Germany) and is a recording artist for Edition Svitzer and Svitzer Music (Denmark).

    ADAM TAN (he/him) is a marimba soloist, composer and content creator based in Boorloo (Perth, Western Australia). Adam is most known for making online content about percussion, over 33,000 subscribers and 5 million views on YouTube, and over 5 million views on Instagram.

    Adam has performed and presented hundreds of performances and classes to live audiences in Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan, and United States, as well as online audiences in Argentina, Honduras and the United Kingdom. As a composer, Adam's works for percussion are performed regularly around the world and appear on repertoire lists for schools, competitions and festivals, including the UIL Texas Prescribed Music List (PML). Adam is also the director of Marimbafest Australia, an organisation that has curated 5 Marimbafest international marimba festival and competitions since 2019 under Adam’s leadership.

    Adam is a Premier Artist of Marimba One (USA), a Signature Artist of Encore Mallets and Salyers Percussion (USA) with the Encore Mallets Adam Tan series, an Artist Endorser of Black Swamp Percussion (USA), Composer of Edition Svitzer (Denmark), Artist of Soundbrenner (Hong Kong). Designer of 'THE TRAVELLER by Adam Tan', a percussion backpack in collaboration with HAOSEN (Taiwan) and Associate Artist with the Australian Music Centre.
