Marine Fossil Fossick
Event description
Fossils are special and loved by children and adults alike, but not many people know you can find really impressive examples close to the centre of Melbourne.
But … only if you know what you are looking for! Join our experts at a well known location only 20mins from the Melbourne CBD - Rickett’s Point Sanctuary.
It’s a haven for wildlife but also for special iron-rich fossils. Let’s chase away the winter blues away by spotting crabs, starfish, black swans, pelicans, or a pod of dolphins PLUS finding and learning all about the ancient marine fossils!
These fossils are known the world over, yet most Melbournian’s don’t know about them!
Kids and parents will be led by Sage, our knowledgeable nature facilitator as we explore the sanctuary, hunt down fossils and safely learn about the unique Aussie marine life in the rock pools.
Kids will create their own clay fossil medallion to take home and honestly, there’s nothing like enjoying the sea air outdoors to have a jolly good time.
We want to support you in learning about the natural world. It’s our passion.
Please Note: As visitors to this protected sanctuary, nothing is taken from the sanctuary.
Participants must wear reef-safe footwear like gumboots or aqua shoes (detailed in email following registration).
Plus, we'll do a good deed while out there too by collecting any plastic/litter we find with tongs - doing our bit to help the marine park - an activity loved by kids and parents alike.
There’s a lot to see and do but, rosy cheeks and happy snaps with fossils guaranteed!
Perfect for ages 4-14 years (Infants under 14 months free of charge; please note rock platforms can be slippery for very young siblings)
Parents/guardians must supervise their children throughout the workshop.
We look forward to seeing you there!
