Marita Mangano ‘blues, jazz+ funk on’
Event description
Inspired by the film 'Storm Boy,' Marita Mangano has realised her childhood dream, living amidst the natural beauty of a remote, north-east Tasmanian coastal shack. Surrounded by pelicans, seagulls, and the ever-changing landscape, she has found her creative sanctuary. As a singer, songwriter, guitarist, and percussionist, Marita released her second CD, 'Just Like You,' in 2023. This collection of seven original songs, co-produced with Tasmanian multi-instrumentalist Pete Cornelius, is a vibrant expression of freedom and passion. The album features contributions from legendary Sydney pianist Peter Head and Gold Coast violinist Sue Ferrers, a member of the original Brisbane Celtic folk band 'Natives Of Bedlam.' Born in Deception Bay with Sicilian heritage, Marita's musical roots are firmly planted in Brisbane, where she began her journey at the 1993 Woman In Voice.
Marita's performance credits are extensive. She has graced the stages of the Festival Of Voices in Launceston, Junction Arts Festival, and Hobart Fringe Festival. Her presence has been felt at significant events like the International Women's Day celebration at Hobart Female Factory and the St Marys Sesquicentennial. Marita has performed at festivals including the Wellbeing Festival Break O' Day, Multicultural Harmony Day, Bay Of Fires Art Market, Bicheno Food and Wine Festival, and the Flinders Island Maritime History Symposium. Notable appearances also include the Spirit of Tasmania, Wrest Point, Country Club Casino, and the Republic Bar Hobart, where she won the 2003 May Day Song Contest. Her band, Natives Of Bedlam, has supported Steeleye Span on their world tour and performed at renowned festivals like Maleny, Woodford, and Byron Bay.
