Description

MĀHŪ MIX PRESENTS: MASK4MASK

A world ritual for the masked, the becoming, the seen, and the unseen.

Masks have never been only about hiding.

Across cultures and ceremonial traditions, masks can protect the wearer, make room for spirit, transform the body, invite fertility and levity, and let us step into another version of ourselves. A mask can become a mirror. A mouth for what has gone unsaid. A portal between who we were and who we are ready to become.

Our bodies carry histories: memory, survival, tenderness, grief, pleasure, and possibility. When we invite the mask, we ask:

Who do we em(body)?
Who do we summon?
What must be released to make room for something new?
What happens when we give ourselves permission to become?

This Halloween, on October 31, Māhū Mix presents Mask4Mask: a night of music, movement, costume, performance, desire, ceremony, and collective transformation.

As Halloween moves the world towards a shift, whether of Makahiki with the rise of Makali’i, towards the Filipino Undás, towards Día de los Muertos, we gather with reverence for those before us and responsibility toward those who come after us. We dance with the seven generations behind, beside, and ahead of us. We honor the hands, prayers, desires, and unfinished dreams that helped make our presence possible.

Come masked, if you wish. Create one, buy one, paint one, weave one, borrow one, or embody one. Come as a guardian, a monster misunderstood, an ancestor, a lover, a soft boy, a doll, a future self, or something that has not found a name yet. How will you make way for a new ahu, altaran, ofrenda, fale 'aitu, dambana, altar, or shrine for the contemporary ceremony.

The time is now.
The world ritual is here.

SPONSORS + COLLABORATORS

Want to help make this night unforgettable?

Māhū Mix welcomes sponsors, vendors, collaborators, and community partners who want to support Māhū, queer, trans, Pasifika, Hawaiian, and local LGBTQ+ community through music, art, nightlife, and collective care.

To sponsor, table, sell, donate, or collaborate, contact @MahuMix808.

ADDITIONAL INFO

We are working to bring a pupu vendor selling pre-made food on site. Final food-vendor information will be announced once confirmed.

The venue is mobility-accessible, and all restrooms will be designated all-gender for the event. Venue security and our Māhū Mix Safety Angels are being briefed on Māhū and trans sensitivity, consent, de-escalation, and community care.

Our Safety Angels will help keep inter-community beef off the dance floor, offer hydration support, and provide harm-reduction supplies and information, including naloxone, Narcan, and safer-use resources as available.

Community vendors and sponsors are welcome. We are also working toward having H3RC, or another community partner, provide safer-sex and safer-party materials for harm reduction.

COMMUNITY AGREEMENT

Everyone is welcome as we build a Māhū utopia together.

That means Māhū bodies to the front. We uplift trans+ and MVPFAFF+ people while creating a room where everyone can participate with care, humility, consent, and aloha.

We ask you to reflect on your relationship to queerness and queerphobia; unpack the biases and “isms” you may carry; and connect to the root of your pleasure. This space thrives when we uplift Māhū and people who rarely see themselves reflected on or off stage.

Consider how many spaces already cater to you in daily life. Let that awareness guide how you enter this one.

Respect is non-negotiable. Unwanted touching, invasive or unpleasant gazing, harassment, homo-transphobia, racism, judgment, or other disrespectful behavior will not be tolerated. If you cross a boundary, our Safety Team and venue security may remove you without a refund.

Keep it cute. Keep it consensual. No ack lidat or get lepo'd 💅🏽

TICKET ACCESS + SLIDING SCALE

SPECIAL-REQUEST DISCOUNTED TICKETS

Special-request discounted tickets are intended for trans people, Māhū people, queer Pasifika people, and MVPFAFF+ community members, including but not limited to Vaka Sa Lewa Lewa, Palopa, Fa’afafine, Akavaʻine, Fakaleiti, Fakafifine, Rae Rae, and Fafafine people.

Please request these tickets only if you identify as a trans person, a Māhū person, a queer Pasifika person, or another member of the MVPFAFF+ community.

If you are a queer Islander or a Black or brown local person facing cost barriers, reach out to us. We will do our best to meet you where you are.

DONATION TICKETS

If you have greater financial access through a military or government job, family support, a higher income, or other resources, please consider purchasing a donation ticket.

Donation tickets help us subsidize entry and fund the dolls, the kings, the in-betweens, local artists, safety support, and the labor that makes this world possible.

WHY DO WE PRACTICE SLIDING SCALE?

We practice sliding scale so that cost is less likely to exclude the people this space is built to center. If you are able to pay more, your contribution helps make lower-cost access possible for someone else.

Learn more about sliding scale through this unaffiliated explainer.

FUTURE EVENTS

MĀHŪ DJ UNIVERSITY

GET $$$ 2 LEARN HOW 2 DJ?

You read that right.

Māhū Mix is committed to cultivating bad bitchery on island and beyond. With support from local and national grants, we plan to open paid DJ learning and training opportunities through our collective in 2027!!!

Priority will go to queer Kānaka applicants, with additional space for local and/or queer community members. If you are interested, start coming through, volunteering with us, making face, and staying tuned for the official rollout later this winter where we will make our first cohort!

For more information, reach out to @DollAgenda or @MahuMix808.

SCORPI-HEAUX WEEKEND in MAUI MIX

Celebrate five years of Māhū Mix with our first-ever Neighbor Island debut.

We are stoked to celebrate all you fine-ass Scorpi-heauxs from Friday, November 13 through Sunday, November 15, in Wailuku and Kahului.

Ask your tūtūs for a sleepover, book a hotel, go car camping, and come celebrate HERA’s 30th alongside our beloved baddie Spence’s birthday.

Expect DJs including Maui local MIALA, the sophomore Hawaiian alkane's sophomore debut of Kaizzy, the debut of Kānaka Māhū DJ Dreggs, and Māhū Mix resident producers MO NANi MO LOVE and HERA.

If you know Maui queers, femmes, women, artists, dancers, volunteers, or community members who would love to learn, collaborate, or build with us, send them our way. We want to meet more of the māhūi on Maui.

PRIDE MTHAFKN WEEKEND

Māhū Mix is hoe’nored to close out Pride for the third time in a row, because we really curate the fkn vibes.

Catch us DJing the official Pride Festival on October 17. Then catch us closing out Pride from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on October 18 at ADEZ Steakhouse and Lounge with Yooey, MOʻOMONA sisters, MO NANi MO LOVE, and HERA.

HEʻE NALU MĀHŪ

Stay tuned for an intentional Māhū and queer surf and beach gathering in late November or mid-December.

This is a place to show off brand-new top-surgery scars, wear the bikini you have been saving, be safe and sexy, and gather with community. All bodies are welcome. This is not a surf lesson. Please know and honor your own skill level, ocean comfort, and limits.

LOOKING 4 VIBE CURATORS

YOU LIKE JOIN?

Are you alternative, weird, subversive, artistic, and hard-working? Come on and join.

Māhū Mix is expanding, growing, and looking for more baddies. We are a grassroots, volunteer-powered collective that sweats, bleeds, and cries love into the spaces we have not always been given. We can only evolve when more voices arrive.

Anyone is welcome to offer their skills and talents. If there is not enough of a certain voice, culture, art form, or perspective in the room, step that pu$$y up and join us.

Come learn, create, and build your path as an artist, entertainer, producer, organizer, or vibe curator.

ALLIES + ACCOMPLICES

Haoles and non-locals: we want you here too, especially when you come ready to support, learn, follow community leadership, and shake some booty with respect.

If you are Kānaka, Pasifika, or local and straight/cis, you are welcome to celebrate with us. Just remember whose joy, safety, and visibility this space is designed to center.
