Masterclass: Strengthening Practice through Culture
Presented by: Kyalie Moore

This masterclass explores how culturally grounded approaches can enhance responses to Family Domestic and Sexual Violence (FDSV) in Aboriginal communities. Over recent years, Stopping Family Violence (SFV) has collaborated with Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOS) to build capacity and develop practice models that align with cultural values and healing.

Through a co-designed pilot initiative, SFV and ACCOS have developed an ACCO Service Model and Framework that integrate Aboriginal Healing and Behaviour Change with the Safe & Together Model. This adaptation centres on:

  • Perpetrator Accountability – Ensuring the perpetrator is held responsible without victim-blaming, while addressing contributing factors such as intergenerational trauma and substance misuse through culturally safe programs.
  • Keeping Children Safe and Connected to Culture – Prioritising children's well-being by supporting their connection to family, community, and cultural identity, recognising the harm caused by practices such as child removal.
  • Partnering with the Non-Offending Parent – Supporting the non-offending parent (often the mother) through services that affirm cultural identity, promote healing, and build on protective strengths.

Kyalie Moore will guide participants through key themes including:

  • The importance of culturally aligned practices in FDV work
  • The use of cultural frameworks within Aboriginal communities
  • FDSV in the Aboriginal context
  • Principles of culturally informed practice
  • Trauma-informed approaches in Aboriginal settings
  • Practical strategies for strengthening practice through culture

This session offers vital insights for practitioners aiming to deliver more effective, respectful, and healing-centred FDSV responses in partnership with Aboriginal communities.
