More information about the exhibition:

Materiel World, by artist Loren Kronemyer, is a project that started in 2021 as part of Kronemyer’s ongoing interest in learning and sharing survival skills, both practical (like tool-making) and emotional (like communication and care). This caused her to begin thinking more deeply about her relationship with guns. As an American living in Lutruwita/Tasmania, she feels the positive affects of disarmament here every day. Kronemyer has never owned a gun, but wanted to see if it was possible to learn about them by imagining them as completely peaceful objects.

This led her to the imperfect idea of making a bullet from recycled copper. This bullet that could reverse harm by returning stolen, mined materials back to the earth.

Though the idea of creating a non-harmful bullet was unreasonable and contradictory, it was also a very practical way to learn. Step by step, Kronemyer learned how to make and use every piece of equipment that she was legally allowed to. This journey involved openly navigating uncomfortable and unfamiliar places, including the legal system, heavily armed subcultures, and systems of power and control that surround danger. The title Materiel World borrows a word from the military: materiel, which refers to equipment, munitions, and other non-human supplies.

This exhibit shares the documentation of this learning process, set inside a working recreation of the indoor pistol range where she received training in shooting a gun.
