Mau Rākau (9 years and up)
Description
Step into the world of Mau Rākau – the traditional Māori art of weaponry – in this fun, action-packed afternoon wānanga for tamariki & rangatahi aged 9 - 16.
Guided by friendly, experienced Mau Rākau kaiako, Brad Ta'avao, attendees will learn basic taiaha skills through exciting games, movement challenges, and storytelling. All cultures welcome.
This is a safe, hands-on introduction where tamariki can build coordination, confidence, and connection to te ao Māori while having heaps of fun. Suitable for boys and girls, no prior experience needed – just bring comfy clothes, a drink bottle, and lots of energy. If you came to the last event, we hope you will come back for more.
Book early to secure your spot on this special day of learning, laughter, and play!
Head to Hakatere marae after lunch on the day, ready for a 1pm start. The wānanga training will finish at 4 at which time we invite whānau members to arrive to see what the rangatahi and tamariki have learnt. They will put on a small showing for you.
Older rangatahi can choose to join this wānanga or come along with the adults for the full day wānanga the day before.
This event is organised by Te Huka Tai Trust. We didn't want cost to be a barrier, so are fully funding it thanks to funding we received from Lotteries.
