Mau Rākau
Event description
Join us for a full-day wānanga to learn and experience Mau Rākau – the traditional Māori art of weaponry.
Guided by experienced Mau Rākau kaiako, Brad Ta'avao (pictured), you’ll develop skills in handling the taiaha and patu, explore the tikanga (protocols) that underpin the practice, and learn the stories and values woven into this taonga tuku iho (treasured heritage).
Open to adults and youth (15+) of all genders and cultures, this wānanga will strengthen your body, mind, and connection to te ao Māori. Please note: On Sunday 21 September there is a mau rākau wānanga for 9-14 year olds. Details here.
We start with a mihi whakatau (formal welcome) at 10am, so please ensure you are at Hakatere Marae before 10, ready to be welcomed on as a group.
Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking to deepen your knowledge, you’ll leave with new skills, confidence, and appreciation for this rich Māori tradition.

The event is organised by Te Huka Tai Trust with funding from Lotteries. We didn't want cost to be a barrier, so have created an option for 'free tickets' and an option for 'koha tickets' where you can pay what works for you. Please choose whichever type of ticket suits. We want the event to be accessible.
