Mau Rākau (9 - 14 year olds)
Event description
Step into the world of Mau Rākau – the traditional Māori art of weaponry – in this fun, action-packed wānanga just for tamariki aged 9 - 14 years!
Guided by friendly, experienced Mau Rākau kaiako, Brad Ta'avao, attendees will learn basic taiaha skills through exciting games, movement challenges, and storytelling.
This is a safe, hands-on introduction where tamariki can build coordination, confidence, and connection to te ao Māori while having heaps of fun. Suitable for boys and girls, no prior experience needed – just bring comfy clothes, a drink bottle, a packed lunch and lots of energy.
Book early to secure your spot in this special day of learning, laughter, and play!
Please note: For older youth and adults, a mau rākau wānanga is run the day before, on Saturday 20 September, see here to register.
This event is organised by Te Huka Tai Trust with funding from Lotteries. We didn't want cost to be a barrier, so have created an option for 'free tickets' and an option for 'koha tickets' where you can pay what works for you. Please choose whichever type of ticket suits. We want the event to be accessible.
