Description

What if action doesn't begin with understanding — but with connection?

In complex times, connection is not a nice-to-have. It is how we build common ground, create possibilities and find ways to take action — together.

Driving Change — Creating Connection in Complex Times

Climate change, inequality, shifting work landscapes and community disconnection—these are complex challenges no single discipline, individual or organisation can solve alone. They ask for something different: the ability to cross boundaries, listen deeply, build trust, step into uncomfortable spaces to work across differences and figure things out together.

But how do we create the connections that turn learning into understanding, capacity into agency, and confidence into action? How do we build cohesion when the world around us feels increasingly fragmented? And what might each of us do differently within our own circles of influence?

Join us for an evening of ideas, conversations and celebration as we explore what it takes to build meaningful connections that drive collective action.  Bringing together voices from academia, community, government and industry, a thought-provoking panel and genuine discussions will explore the mindsets, practices and opportunities that help us move beyond knowing about change we need to becoming part of creating it.

We will also celebrate the people demonstrating this is possible - sharing the work of our partners, and recognising students contributing to meaningful social impact through awarding the 2027 McCusker Prize in Humanitarian Engineering, before sharing canapés at the end of another big year.

Come curious. Bring your questions, experiences and ideas. Connect with students, alumni, ANU leaders, educators, practitioners and industry partners who are creating the changes we need — and discover with us what becomes possible when we stop trying to solve complex problems alone and instead harness the connections, confidence and agency to positively shape what comes next. You can be part of the community moving us towards better futures for all.

Canapés and refreshments will be provided. Please register for catering purposes.

This Thought Leaders Exchange is hosted by the ANU McCusker Institute.
