MD/DC APPA Fall Meeting 2026

The Maryland DC Chapter of APPA (MDDCAPPA) is pleased to announce our upcoming Fall Meeting at Loyola University Maryland. We will have two exciting presentations and Fall elections.

PARKING INFORMATION:

Park at The Cathedral of Mary Our Queen Parking Lot located at 5200 N. Charles Street in the Lower Tier on the left. There will be shuttle buses to take attendees from the lot to the Student Center where McGuire Hall is located. 

Vendors can pull up to the Student Center to unload their materials, then park at the Cathedral and transfer their supplies onto the shuttle bus from the Cathedral lot or park in the Butler Lot.  If they park in the Butler Lot, Joe Griffin (JGriffin@loyola.edu) will have to issue them a parking pass, or they will be towed.  If you give Joe Griffin their email addresses, he will send them a pass. The Jenkins lot is NOT available for people attending this event.

Educational Session 1: Beyond the Master Plan: Aligning Institutional Goals, Asset Management, and Capital Planning

Campus master plans provide an important roadmap for future development, but they often do not fully address the ongoing repair, renewal, and operational needs of existing facilities. As buildings age, change in use, and face increasing demands, facility leaders need a more comprehensive and repeatable approach to planning and prioritization. This session explores how facility asset management planning can bridge the gap between long-range master planning and day-to-day operational and capital decision-making. Participants will learn how to align institutional goals with asset condition, functionality, and risk considerations to develop a defensible, prioritized program of facility projects. The presentation will also highlight the value of consistent metrics and key performance indicators in improving facilities performance and communicating needs to campus leadership.

Presenter: John Edwards, FEA

John Edwards is the CEO of FEA, where he leads large, complex projects for institutional clients focused on facility asset management, capital planning, and long-term portfolio optimization. In this role, he fosters a collaborative culture centered on strong client partnerships and a deep understanding of organizational goals, operational needs, and long-term priorities. John’s professional background includes service as a U.S. Navy Civil Engineer Corps Officer, where he held roles as a commanding officer, installation public works officer, and regional facilities executive, managing diverse facility portfolios and complex infrastructure programs.

Educational Session 2: Geothermal HVAC Systems and Decarbonization

With the recent push for decarbonization of building heating systems, geothermal heat exchange technologies are becoming increasingly popular for commercial and institutional buildings.  Geothermal heat pump systems offer higher cooling and heating efficiencies than standard air-cooled heat pump systems, but require a significant upfront investment for the geothermal wells and associated piping.  We will review the benefits and challenges associated with Geothermal HVAC systems and the impacts of the Maryland Building Energy Performance Standard (BEPS) requirements.  We will also review a geothermal heat pump system that is located right here on the Loyola University Campus.

Presenter: Kyle Horst, Senior Associate

Kyle is a Senior Associate at JPA, where he focuses on providing mechanical and plumbing engineering design for government, corporate/office, and higher education projects. His expertise includes planning, design, and construction-phase services involving HVAC, plumbing and piping systems, fire and life safety systems, and campus-wide infrastructure systems for a variety of public and private higher education assignments, including the following projects for Loyola University: Donnelly Science Center Renovation, Newman Towers Renovation, Boulder Café Renovation, Bookstore Renovation, Library Central Plant Study.
