YES-NO RIGHT-LEFT ON-OFF Beyond the Binary
Event description
Collarts School of Design will present YES-NO RIGHT-LEFT ON-OFF Beyond the Binary - an event in two parts that
investigate the visual language of complexity and uncertainty. In our fast-paced and media-saturated world, complex
ideas are often over- simplified resulting in binary distinctions that leave little room for nuance, meaningful
debate or compromise. Collarts students and staff - across graphic and digital design, photography, fashion,
interior design and animation invite you to explore ways to communicate the liminal ideas that sit between or beyond
binary options.
PART 1
Part 1 features interactive installations and games that will facilitate conversations that are both loud and quiet, personal and public.
[[Hope Chaotic]]Â Is a competitive/cooperative game for two teams created by the Collarts game design students and teachers. The teams must communicate and work together to not only stymie their opponents progress but at the same time achieve their own goals for victory - but it's a team effort - or chaos ensues. Follow the path, support your teammates and accomplish your goals.
SHAPE OF HOPE Installation:Â Textiles are the very fabric of our lives and in this piece we use waste textiles created by the fashion and interior industries to craft a conversation. A conversation that is both internal and external, a conversation that is more than a moment but lasts and grows as more individuals engage in and revisit the space to continue talking.

FEATURED EVENTS
TALK:Â Now is Better - graphic design and optimism EVENT CANCELLED DUE TO ILLNESS
Wednesday 29th May 6.30 - 7.30Â
Stefan Sagmeister's latest book 'Now is Better' incorporates art and data visualisation to propose that the world is better than it ever was. Can art and design persuade us that the world is indeed a better place and will continue to be so when we are also saturated with images and media of tragedy and despair? Join this panel discussion with Marty Brown (ex. IDEO, Culture Amp) Anna Matthews (Digital Designer Atollon) and Cameron Rose (Program Leader Graphic & Digital Design)
WORKSHOP:Â Beyond CYMK Artist Workshop
Saturday 25th May 12.00 - 4.00
Over the space of an afternoon embark on a transformative journey of self-expression at our immersive workshop, where art meets emotion in an exploration of colour and pattern. Led by Melbourne interdisciplinary artist Oli Ruskidd, this unique experience delves into the liminal space between the standard colour options of CYMK, where hues merge and patterns intertwine to evoke a kaleidoscope of emotions.
Under Oli’s guidance you will use fully recycled artists inks from Lousy Ink to create a mural that reflects the collective imagination of all participants. You will also be supported on your creative journey by a skilled art therapist, who will provide guidance as you connect with your emotions with mindfulness and intention.
Join us for an unforgettable experience that transcends the boundaries of the binary and celebrates the beauty of human connection through art and design. Come, be inspired, and leave your mark on our collaborative creation!
