Me, The “Other” Documentary Film - PRIDEFEST 2026 - Pride WA
Description
Me, The “Other” is a powerful and thought-provoking documentary film that sparks crucial conversations about otherness and oneness. Through the stories of twelve students from diverse backgrounds in Michigan, the film paints a vibrant tapestry of the human experience, the threads that connect us all, and the barriers that divide us.
These remarkable young individuals recount their personal journeys through prejudice, adversity, and resilience, revealing that “otherness” is not a fixed or singular concept. Their stories weave together a rich narrative of experiences with racism, sexual harassment, chronic illness, sexual orientation, gender identity, religious prejudice, immigration struggles, mental health issues, and more. Despite their differences, their stories reveal a profound commonality – we are all “others,” and it is our shared humanity that makes us truly human.
At a time when far-right extremism is spreading globally, film director and co-producer Shidan Majidi believes that now more than ever, we must prioritise community-building through projects that confront and dismantle prejudice.
Me, The “Other” won the top award as Best Film at the 2021 Astoria Film Festival in New York City. It has also been honoured as Best Documentary at the Buddha International Film Festival and Docs Without Borders Film Festival.
Shidan Majidi graduated from Curtin University, Perth with a double major in Film & Theatre, and left for New York City to further his studies. His first professional job upon graduation was as Research Assistant to Ron Nyswaner (screenwriter of Academy Award-winning Philadelphia, and Emmy Award-winning Fellow Travelers). A long career on and off Broadway led to an off-Broadway debut with the sold-out queer musical, YANK!
