Medicine Walk & Visit to Radical Plant Folk: 28 November 2026
What to Expect
JARSQUAD brings people together through communal food-preservation, to practice sharing ingredients, recipes, and know-how by making jams and preserves as a ‘squad’.
What we'll be doing together:
At this HARVEST HANDS event, we'll visit the community herb garden tended by Radical Plant Folk located at School Farm in Dartington. There we will learn ways to identify a few helpful plant allies, and discover some of their uses in folk herbalism.
We'll be able to harvest, learn about, and make some root medicine together which can be taken home (just bring 2 x cleaned medium jars). We're likely working with elecampane and thyme amongst other herbs.
No previous experience necessary - we will be shown what to do and all other materials will be provided.
There will be shelter if there is rain but we will be outdoors/exposed so please dress accordingly and have good shoes.
We'll have time to have lunch together around a fire. You're welcome to bring a packed lunch and snacks to share. Warm beverages and cake will be provided.
Travel by Bus from Plymouth to Dartington
We'll be meeting at Royal Parade and catch the bus (80 - to Paignton). Please bring bus fare if you can, or let us know if you need transport support in the check-out questions.
If you'd like to travel together with us, meet us at the Royal Parade bus stop (A9 - at Premier Inn, opp Theatre Royal) by 8:45am. We'll be boarding the 8:57am bus 80 (est. travel time 75-80minutes).
After disembarking at Shinner's Bridge, there is a ~13min mostly flat/gradual uphill walk from the bus stop to the herb garden.
We aim to arrive at the herb garden by 10:30am for an 11am start. We plan on leaving around 3pm, arriving to Royal Parade Plymouth by 4:30pm.
If you need to travel by car or train please let us know and we'll meet you at School Farm directly. We can coordinate and send on instructions for parking and assist on other questions.
Please also let us know if you have any food or known plant allergies.

FAQs
- Is the herb garden wheelchair accessible?
The herb garden is located on the premises of School Farm, and wheelchairs would need some assistance to navigate the uneven dirt paths (which may be muddy in November) from either the carpark or the other entrance on the route that will be taken for the bus+short walk.
The herb garden exploration and planned activities will take place outdoors. The paths around the herb beds are woodchipped and a bit uneven so may require some assistance to navigate, but fine for walkers to access.
The closest toilet is a compost loo which are up a set of wooden steps. There will also be access to a toilet a short distance (~100m) away that has only one small step but unfortunately, is not wheelchair accessible.
If you are coming with a wheelchair or walker do let us know in advance and we will do our best to assist, and address any additional access questions you have.
- Do I have to bring anything?
We ask attendees to wear good shoes, and be suitably dressed for the weather, with lots of warm layers etc as we'll be working outdoors.
You are also requested to bring a packed lunch and snacks to share and a water bottle for hydration.
If you'd like to take some herbal remedies back, please bring along 2 x medium jars (eg honey or jam jars will work well). All other ingredients and materials will be provided to make the remedies.
- How much should I pay?
Our foraging walks, farm visits and sessions are offered for free thanks to the funding support of National lottery. Your booking on helps us plan better.
We request a minimum donation of £4 to help cover material costs to make the remedies which will be provided.
If you are able to support with a larger donation of £16+, it would cover someone who isn't able to afford the material costs and help JarSquad's mission.
We reserve the right to cancel the event if there are fewer than 5 bookings.
- But I can't afford to attend?
JarSquad offers free tickets as it is important to us that our events are financially accessible for everyone.
It would be helpful if you could make any contribution to the material costs but please pick the "I'll bring a cash donation / I need a free ticket" if that's needed.
- I don't know how to make online payments. Can I bring a cash contribution instead?
Yes, we have an option for a "I'll bring a cash donation" ticket where you bring a cash contribution if you are unable to make online card payments.
- Can I take the train to Totnes instead of the bus?
You're welcome to take the train and make your own travel/walking arrangements to School Farm.
We just request that you also arrive at the herb garden around 10:30am so we can start on time at 11am.
We plan on leaving the site around 3pm so do plan your return journey accordingly.
- I'm driving and I'd like to offer a ride
That's very kind! We taking public transport as it is more sustainable (and the bus route is pretty!). Additionally parking at the site could be limited and we'd like to prioritise this for anyone who needs closer access (ie: wheelchair users).
If you’re offering a lift, please be prepared for us to conduct a quick check (ie: some questions on your driving record & vehicle) as this helps us keep the group safe and comfortable.
Please reach out to us via email: hello@jarsquad.com with subject line "offering a ride"
- What is solidarity economy?
We understand 'solidarity economy' to mean actions such as 'mutual aid', or arrangements that prioritize social benefits over financial profits, often involving the active participation of people involved to shape these actions/arrangements.
We'd love if you'd like to be part of our 'squad' in this more involved way! We warmly welcome chats (whilst chopping!) about what it means to co-create a gift economy, and how we already participate in alternative and diverse economies here in Plymouth.
