Event description

Ni! Bilyada Waanginy Listen! The Rivers are Speaking,
Meeka Moorart Full Moon Ceremony:
Walbraniny Ngala Bilya Healing Our River

"And the people came together to heal the River...Healing the River, heal the people. On a full moon in Birak we will gather and walk slowly on Whadjuk Boodja. Families will share meriny (food) and listen to the stories from Elders. We will gain knowledge of the Derbal Yerrigan and the dreamtime story of the stars. To have a shared understanding of places of significance on Boorloo / Perth so that we can all have a greater understanding and knowledge of the land that we walk. If we can have that greater understanding together, as a community, then I believe we can have a better understanding of one another. That is when the healing process begins - for us, for the community, for the River but, most importantly, for our Elders" (Della Rae Morrison).

Join us with your camp chair and picnic at Langley Park in Boorloo / Perth for this Aboriginal-led cultural experience with storytelling, dancing and the singing of a new full-moon song. To learn more about Meeka Moorart, watch this video of Dr Noel Nannup singing the song and explaining the vision of the Meeka Moorat Full Moon Ceremonies.

Last year, in the season of Djilba, the Danjoo Koorliny Walking Together Social Impact Festival gathered at Gurndandulup / Matilda Bay to watch the full moon rise and sing the Meeka Moorart Full Moon song. Now there will be a gathering at Langley Park in Boorloo / Perth, on January 29, to share meriny (food), listen to stories from Elders about the Derbal Yerrigan / Swan River, and once again sing up the full moon.

This event will be organised and hosted by Della Rae Morrison and Johnny Doan along with respected Noongar Elders and community leaders, and is supported by the Danjoo Koorliny Walking Together Social Impact Team.

In 2020, the leaders of Danjoo Koorliny recorded the Meeka Moorart Full Moon song with Noongar singers including Noel Nannup, Richard Walley, Della Rae Morrison, Farley Garlett, Josey Hansen, Carol Innes, Ezra Jacobs-Smith, Elisha Jacobs-Smith and Kobi Morrison, along with John Butler, Iain Grandige, Zal Kanga-Parabia and others. They also invited artists and local community to work on a COVID-sized version of a long-term project as part of Ni! Bilyada Waanginy - Listen! The Rivers are Speaking.

This event is supported by the Danjoo Koorliny Walking Together project - an initiative designed and led by Aboriginal leaders to help us all walk together as Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people towards 2029 (200 years of colonisation in Perth) and beyond, be it on Noongar country, throughout Western Australia, Australia or globally. The leaders of Danjoo Koorliny Walking Together are Dr Noel Nannup OAM, Dr Richard Walley OAM, Professor Emeritus Colleen Hayward AM and Carol Innes, working together with a large team of other Elders and leaders - many of whom will be present at this event.

All COVID-19 safety measures apply, including signing in and keeping 1.5 metres apart. You are also welcome to bring and wear your own mask if you wish.

Please note this is an alcohol-free event.
