Join us for the next instalment of the Hunter Manufacturing Awards' 'Meet the Manufacturer' series as we head behind the scenes at Downer Rail in Cardiff.

Cardiff Maintenance Centre is one of the Hunter’s most iconic rail industry sites, with a heritage dating back to the Cardiff Railway Workshops in 1928 and more than a century of rail manufacturing in the region, from steam locomotives and diesel fleets through to modern passenger trains.

Following Downer’s commencement of operations in the late 1990s, Cardiff became the manufacturing base for the Millennium Train fleet and later a cornerstone of the Waratah delivery program. Since 2000, more than half of Sydney’s passenger rollingstock has been manufactured, fitted out or commissioned at Cardiff. Today, the site plays a critical role in maintaining and upgrading Sydney’s passenger train fleets through heavy maintenance, overhaul, repair and modification activities.

The site is also home to Downer’s Electronic Test and Repair Centre, an Australian-first capability that supports complex rail electronics repairs, highly skilled jobs and sovereign technical expertise. More recently, the NSW Government’s investment in the Tangara Life Extension program has expanded Cardiff’s capability while creating new jobs, apprenticeships and training opportunities in the Hunter. Together, these investments are strengthening local industrial capability and retaining the skills needed to support future rollingstock manufacturing in NSW, including the State’s Future Fleet program.
