Event description

A concert featuring The Melbourne University Jazz Orchestra and Super Sax.

SUPER SAX

Super Sax is a group of 5 dedicated sax players with ‘chops to burn’, a mellow trumpeter and a rhythm section to keep up. First started as a Charlie Parker ‘tribute’ band in the 70’s, the LA alto sax player Med Flory arranged Charlie Parker solos for 5 saxs and rhythm and performed them regularly with the original Supersax. Other arrangers followed on and created a large repertoire for this ensemble.

In this Concert we are performing two of the original Supersax charts: Dizzy Gillespie’s Blue ‘N’ Boogie and Night in Tunisia, Wayne Shorter’s Witch Hunt, and premiering a wonderful new arrangement by Elliot Deutsch of the Paul Desmond Solo to Stardust.

JAZZ ORCHESTRA

Join the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music Jazz Orchestra for an afternoon celebrating the colour, energy, and sophistication of the big band tradition. This performance showcases the ensemble’s versatility across swing, Latin, and contemporary jazz styles, featuring works from Duke Ellington, Quincy Jones, Sammy Nestico, Frank Foster, and Bob Mintzer.

The program includes Ellington’s theatrical Such Sweet Thunder, Jones' soulful For Lena & Lennie, and the vibrant Latin groove of Mintzer’s Elvin’s Mambo. Other highlights include the infectious swing of Blues in Hoss’ FlatMagic Flea, and High Five, as well as modern classics such as Herbie Hancock’s Dolphin Dance arranged by Mintzer. The concert also features Sunny Boy, an original composition by student Lyndon Riggs.

Expect a dynamic performance from some of Australia’s finest emerging jazz artists.

PARKING

The City of Melbourne has recently changed the parking restrictions around the Southbank Campus. Parking control hours are now expanded to 7am–10pm, seven days per week, and are capped at three hours. A $2-per-hour fee after 7pm is also now in place. There is no change to the $4-per-hour peak rate between 7am–7pm. Parking inspectors are regularly in the area fining drivers who overstay their meter, so we encourage everyone to be aware and avoid an expensive fine. More information.
