FAQs
- Does it cost money to join the race?
No! The Melbourne Gem Race is an entirely free event.
- How do I sign up to the race?
You can register your interest here on Humantix, but to sign yourself/your team up to the race you will need to do so via the free 'Beyonder' app on the app/google play store. Go into the 'Gem Race' tab in the app and select 'Melbourne Gem Race.'
- How do we participate in the race?
The race is run entirely through the Beyonder travel app. It's free to download on the app & google play store, and although there's an option to upgrade to a paid annual subscription, the Melbourne Gem Race is available to join from a free account, so no cost required! On the day of the race, you'll be able to access a race map that lists all the challenges, prizes & the leaderboard. So you can keep track of your status in the race in comparison to the other competitors!
- Where in Melbourne is the event being held?
The race is being held entirely in Melbourne's CBD precinct. Everywhere listed in the race map is accessible via Melbourne's Free Tram Zone!
- Where will the race kick off from?
The race will commence at the Birrarung Marr Landing. We highly recommend joining us for the beginning of the race on Saturday at 9:30am, so you can meet other racers, collect your race kit & begin to plan your race route with your team. We'll be there at 9am, so feel free to get there anytime from then on!
- What will the prizes be?
Our prizes will be announced in app & via our @beyonderaus socials very soon... but a few of our previous gem race prizes have been: - $450 Alpine Nature Experience Voucher (Vic High Country Gem Race) - 2 night stay at Deep Creek Bright, valued at over $1,000 (Vic High Country Gem Race) - 2x Active Flight Paragliding vouchers, valued at over $500 (Vic High Country Gem Race) - 2 night all inclusive stay at Spring Spur in Tawonga, valued at $830 (Vic High Country Gem Race) - 2x Skydive Australia vouchers, valued at $800 (Great Ocean Road Race) - 3 night stay at Steam Carriage accommodation in Forrest valued at $1,100 (Great Ocean Road Gem Race) - 12 Apostles Helicopter ride for 2, valued at $330 (Great Ocean Road Gem Race) - 2 night stay at Miles Away Shack in Ocean Grove, valued at over $1,000 (Great Ocean Road Gem Race) - Voucher for 'The Curium Experience' escape room for 6, valued at $300 (Collingwood Gem Race)
- Can I join solo or do I need to be in a team?
You absolutely can join the race solo OR compete in a team of up to 10 people.
- Is the event all ages/family friendly?
Yes! The race is suitable for people of all ages to join. All of the challenges, aside from those at bars, are created with families in mind.
- What do the challenges involve?
A majority of challenges will be free to complete, including visiting street art, sculptures, murals, exhibitions, parks & gardens around the city. There will also be a number of challenges you can complete by visiting cafes, restaurants, bars, shops & paid attractions such as escape rooms.
- Who will receive prizes?
The top 5 finishers will get to choose a prize from our major prize pool. There will also be participation prizes raffled out at random to anyone who competes in the race in any capacity
- Will the event still run in bad weather?
Yes! Rain, hail or shine the race will be running. With it being held in late Feb it's likely going to be a warm weekend. So remember to wear a hat & bring plenty of sunscreen. Plenty of challenges can be completed indoors too.
- Is the race scored bases on time, or points?
The race is scored entirely on points. So you don't need to worry about being the fastest to win! It's all about being strategic & completing challenges with the highest points value. It's not about trying to complete EVERY challenge.
- Do I need to be physically fit to compete?
No, the race isn't a running or fitness event. You can get around via whichever mode of transport you like. You can walk, cycle, scooter, tram, train, bus or drive! We highly recommend making use of the CBD's free tram zone, as driving and parking in the CBD is slow & expensive!
- Do I need to be competing for the entire duration of the race?
No, you can spend as much or as little time as you want racing. You might smash out as many challenges as you can just on the Saturday, or you could spread it out at a slower pace over the entire weekend. It's entirely up to you and your team if you're racing as one.
