WHAT TO EXPECT

The Great Victorian Rail Trail is one of Australia’s longest continuous rail trails, stretching 134 kilometers across the picturesque Victorian countryside. It follows the route of the former Mansfield to Tallarook railway line, which was closed in 2008. Today, the trail is a popular destination for cyclists, walkers, and nature lovers, offering a scenic journey through historic towns, lush farmland, forests, and rolling hills.

This event will include walking the final stretch of the Great Victorian Rail Trail where it ends at the little country town of Tallarook. This section of the trail has a more rural landscape that both showcases glimpses of the majestic Great Dividing Range and the beautiful Gouldburn River.

The trail will have gentle inclines and beautiful scenery and is a great track for any fitness level!

We'll be catching the V-Line train together as group! (Tickets Included)

To get to the start point all participants will meet at Southern Cross Train Station and catch the train to the start point in Tallarook. This will also include the return trip back to Southern Cross.

START TIME AND MEET LOCATION

MEETING LOCATION: Southern Cross Station, Spencer Street Melbourne (Meet at the Boost Juice located inside Southern Cross Station).

MEETING TIME: Arrive 08:30am SHARP to meetup and check in for a 9:00am SHARP Departure to the train platform (Plan to arrive early and give yourself extra time for parking if you have driven and to find the group).

NOTE: Arriving on time is ABSOLUTELY critical to this event as we are catching the V-Line train to Tallarook and need to be on time to ensure we are not late to make the train in time. Participants not checked-in by 08:50am may be left behind and forfeit their ticket.

CARPOOLING: Need help finding a ride to the meeting point, feel free to post in the Melbourne Social Walks Facebook Group.

WHAT TO BRING

- Water (at least 2-3L)

- Snack food for the hike and for the afternoon

- A picnic lunch to have whilst on the trail

WHAT TO WEAR

- Comfortable weather suitable walking shoes - Good quality shoes with good grip is recommended.

- Comfortable Weather Suitable Clothing.

- Sun Protective Hat / Beanie, and/or Sunscreen

ITINERARY

08:30am - Meet Southern Cross Station (Boost Juice)

09:00am - Depart for the train (9:00 am SHARP)

09:15am - V-Line Train Departure to Tallarook

10:30am - Arrive in Tallarook

11:00am - Begin Great Victorian Rail Trail Hike (approx. 15km)

03:00pm - Finish Great Victorian Rail Trail Hike (short break after completion and quick explore of Tallarook)

4:00pm - V-Line Train departure to Southern Cross

05:15pm - Arrive at Southern Cross Station

FINISH

This trip will run from 08:30am to 05:30pm starting from and returning to Southern Cross Station.

PLEASE NOTE* The Costs and logistics of organising a group trip on the V-Line Train service means that no cancellations can occur with-in 7 days of the departure. Tickets can be re-sold though if something comes up to prevent you from attending.
