Understanding What Boys and Men Carry, and Where Healing Can Begin

New Direction Consulting invites professionals, leaders, teachers, healthcare workers, justice workers and community partners to a full-day, culturally grounded and trauma-aware professional development workshop.

The Men’s Healing Journey Experience helps participants understand the experiences that can shape boys and men throughout life. The journey begins with the first five years of childhood and explores the influence of family, safety, attachment, belonging, trauma, identity and culture. It then follows the journey through education, mental wellness, relationships, fatherhood, justice involvement, reintegration, healing, accountability and leadership.

This is an interactive learning experience that combines professional information, guided reflection, discussion and experiential activities.

This workshop welcomes both male and female participants, including:

  • Healthcare and mental wellness professionals

  • Justice, corrections and reintegration workers

A Respectful Learning Environment

This workshop addresses subjects that may be emotionally reflective. Participants will never be required to disclose personal experiences. Everyone may participate at their own comfort level, take a break or step outside when needed.

This professional development workshop is educational and is not a substitute for counselling, therapy, medical care or crisis support.

    Understanding the Struggles and Challenges of Incarceration

    Terrence Bear shares lived and professional insight into incarceration, isolation, institutional barriers, reintegration and the challenges individuals face when returning to their families and communities.

    Wellness Break

    Guest Speaker: Understanding Gang Life

    A guest speaker shares insight into gang involvement, belonging, identity, survival, consequences and the pathways that can help people move toward positive change.

    Transition and Reflection

    Participants are given time to reflect on the presentation and prepare for the next session.

  • 11:25 am - 12:00 pm

    Overcoming Addictions

    A grounded discussion about addiction, coping, recovery, accountability and the supports required to create lasting change.

  • 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

    Lunch and Networking

    A one-hour catered lunch break and an opportunity to build professional and community connections. Lunch includes: - Soup and bannock - Assorted sandwiches - Salad - Desserts Please identify any dietary restrictions or food allergies during registration. While reasonable efforts will be made to accommodate dietary needs, an allergen-free environment cannot be guaranteed.

  • 1:00 pm - 2:15 pm

    Interactive Workshop: Men’s Healing Journey Experience

    Participants move through an interactive, culturally grounded and trauma-aware journey examining childhood, family, identity, trauma, mental wellness, relationships, justice involvement, healing and leadership.

  • 2:15 pm - 2:30 pm

    Wellness Break

    Refreshments, rest and personal reflection before the facilitated circle.

  • 2:30 pm - 3:40 pm

    Guided Reflection Circle

    Participants reflect on the Men’s Healing Journey Experience and discuss healing, accountability, prevention and professional responsibility. Personal disclosure is always voluntary.

  • 3:45 pm - 4:00 pm

    Closing Prayer, Closing Song and Adjournment

    Final acknowledgements, closing prayer, closing song and formal conclusion of the workshop.
