Join us for a 2 day Standard Mental Health First Aid® training to become an accredited Mental Health First Aider!

Learn how to provide initial support to another adult who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis, until professional help is received or the crisis resolves. Participants learn about the signs and symptoms of common mental health problems in adults, how to recognise and respond to an emerging or worsening mental health problem and the treatments and supports available.

Upon completion, participates become known as MHFAiders, who are equipped with the skills to provide support when it matters most, playing a vital role in reducing stigma and promoting pathways to support for those experiencing mental health problems in our workplaces, communities, schools, and tertiary institutions.

The course also includes the following:

  • How to recognize common mental health issues
  • More in depth look at Depression, Anxiety, Psychosis, PTSD and Substance Use Disorder
  • How to approach and communicate with someone experiencing a mental health problem
  • How to support someone experiencing a range of mental health issues
  • Where mental health issues develop from
  • Basic De-escalation techniques
  • Top self care strategies that can reduce the risk of burn out / compassion fatigue
  • How to talk to someone who may be expressing suicidal thoughts.
  • How to talk to someone who is at risk of self injury
  • How to approach someone experiencing a crisis or traumatic event.
  • How to approach the conversation about a drug or alcohol problem
  • How to encourage someone to get professional help

Each participant will get further information on additional resources and the MHFA Manual which includes further reading and supports you to complete the online assessment to become an accredited MHFAider.

IMPORTANT INFO

  • Please book using your personal email and mobile number - this is used to create your profile on Mental Health First Aid Australia's platform. If, over time, you lose access to the email account you registered with (i.e. work email), you will also lose access to your Mental Health First Aid account.
  • This is not suitable for anyone currently receiving treatment for a mental health crisis.
  • Participants who successfully pass the post-course test will be accredited as a Mental Health First Aider for three years, before a half-day refresher is required.
  • Minimum numbers required to run.
