Mental Health First Aid

Want to build the skills and confidence to support someone experiencing a mental health problem or crisis?

The Curtin Student Guild, in partnership with Sprout Unit, is offering accredited Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Training for Curtin students at a heavily subsidised rate.

Exclusive Student Price

This nationally recognised training typically costs between $250-$400, however thanks to Guild funding, Curtin students can attend for just $40.

This blended learning course combines:

• 5-7 hours of self-paced online learning, completed before the face-to-face session

• A 4-hour facilitated face-to-face workshop on campus

Upon successful completion of the course and assessment, participants will become Accredited Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAiders), with accreditation valid for three years.

What You'll Learn

Participants will learn how to:

• Recognise the signs and symptoms of common mental health problems

• Provide initial support to someone experiencing a mental health challenge

• Respond to mental health crises and emergency situations

• Use an evidence-based mental health first aid action plan

• Understand available treatments, supports and resources

• Reduce stigma associated with mental illness

• Support help-seeking behaviours

• Apply self-care practices as a Mental Health First Aider

Topics Covered

The course explores a range of common mental health concerns, including:

• Depression

• Anxiety

• Psychosis

• Substance use problems

• Suicidal thoughts and behaviours

• Panic attacks

• Non-suicidal self-injury

• Traumatic events

Important Information

⚠️ This is a blended learning course.

All participants will be required to complete approximately 5-7 hours of online learning prior to 1 October.

To access the online learning modules, students must register using their Curtin student email address. Student details will be shared with Sprout Unit solely for the purpose of course enrolment and distribution of learning materials.

Registrations close on 17 September to allow sufficient time for participants to receive course materials and complete the required online learning before attending the face-to-face workshop.
