Merri Merri Community Quilt
Event description
Join us as we learn about the ecosystem of Merri Merri, and take what we learn to inspire a community quilt honouring our local waterway.
Community quilt making is a collaborative, slow, and exploratory process, mirroring the organic processes that occur in an ecosystem like the Merri Merri. It’s a time to be together, learn together, and make together.
We’ll learn about Merri Merri over five themed sessions – Indigenous Knowledge, Geology, Water, Flora & Fungi, and Fauna.
Along the way we’ll learn a variety of textile artistic techniques, like natural fabric dying, hand embroidery, and hand quilting. No skills or knowledge are necessary, all skills and knowledge are appreciated. We’ll be learning together and teaching each other as we go. All ages welcome.
If you can’t come along to the sessions, you’re still invited to be part of this project – follow our instagram @merrimerriquiltproject to find out more.
Email Mitch (they/them) - mitchthewombat@gmail.com with any questions or suggestions – this is a collaboration, and your thoughts are welcome!
This project takes place on stolen Wurundjeri Country, and we recognise and foreground the vital connection that Wurundjeri people have with the Merri Merri and the surrounding lands – vital to the people and vital to the creek. We pay our respects to their elders, past and present. Sovereignty was never ceded.
Please Note: Sessions will be held on the last Sunday of the month at the East Coburg Neighbourhood House.
