Event description

Experience the uplifting power of Handel’s Messiah this winter with a special afternoon performance at 3pm on Saturday, 19 July 2025, at St James' Anglican Church, Lower Hutt

This unique collaboration brings together two of Wellington’s most respected choirs: the Festival Singers, directed by Ingrid Schoenfeld, and the St Mary of the Angels Choir, directed by William McElwee

Acclaimed organist Jonathan Berkahn will accompany the performance, adding his signature depth and colour to the work’s stirring arias and choruses.

Ingrid Schoenfeld, a concert pianist, has led the Festival Singers since 2019, earning praise for her warm, engaging conducting style and commitment to musical excellence.

William McElwee, Director of Music at St Mary of the Angels, is a multifaceted musician known for drawing outstanding vocalism from his choirs and stretching them musically.

Jonathan Berkahn, a seasoned performer and educator with a PhD in musicology, brings a wealth of experience as an accompanist, soloist, and chamber musician, enriching the performance with his expertise.

While traditionally associated with Christmas and Easter, this mid-winter performance of Messiah offers a refreshing opportunity to experience its radiant choruses and sparkling solos in a new light.

The comfortable setting and lovely acoustics of St James' Anglican Church make it an ideal venue for a winter afternoon concert – a popular choice during the colder months.

Featuring talented soloists from both choirs, this concert promises to be a heart-warming highlight of the season.
