    Event description

MONSU Student Rights + Support is offering FREE Mental Health First Aid Training to all Cantonese speaking International Students enrolled at Monash University.

Important Notice: This course will run over 2 sessions and will be delivered in Cantonese, in person at the Monash University Peninsula campus.

    Session 1: Saturday 16/03/2024, 9am - 4pm.

    Session 2: Saturday 23/03/2024, 9am - 4pm.

All sessions include 1 hour each day for breaks.

You must attend all sessions to receive your certification and accreditation. This course usually costs $300 to complete, however MONSU Student Rights + Support will cover this for you.

This course will provide you with the opportunity to receive an accredited Mental Health First Aid certificate from Mental Health First Aid Australia upon successful completion of the course.

You will learn how to assist adults and your friends who may be experiencing mental health problems or crisis, and how to assist those with mental health problems through practical and evidence-based action plans until professional help is received. This course will also benefit your study or placement skills throughout university and add experience to your resume.

MONSU Student Rights + Support wants to encourage International Students that it's ok to seek help when feeling down and assist in breaking the stigma associated with mental health issues. If you would like to assist friends or peers, or want to learn more about a range of mental health issues and interventions, we highly encourage you to participate in this course.

Content covered in the course includes:

    - Prevalence of mental health problems

    - Common mental health problems: depression, anxiety, psychosis and substance use

    - Mental health crisis behaviours: self-harm, suicidal thoughts and behaviours, panic attacks, aggressive behaviours and traumatic events

    - Skills and techniques to support people encountering mental health issues or a crisis

Training will take place in-person with accredited trainer and counsellor, Ada Poon. By registering you will receive a handbook as part of the training. This training will be delivered in Cantonese only.

After these sessions, there will be an online assessment to complete the course. Students who score above 80% will obtain their certificate of accreditation which is valid for 3 years, and those who score less than 80% will obtain a certificate of completion from MONSU.

This course is free for students and funded by MONSU Caulfield Student Rights + Support. Registrations close Wednesday, March 13 at midday.
