Rwanda: African policemen or regional troublemaker?


In the wake of its 1994 genocide, Rwanda has sent its forces to pacify troubled African states, from Sudan to Central African Republic, Mali to Mozambique. It has won praise and gratitude from the West in the process, but simultaneously faces a storm of criticism for supporting rebel movements laying waste to neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo and infiltrating Burundi. Which is the real Rwanda?

Acclaimed author MIchela Wrong will be visiting Wellington to speak on the topic "Rwanda: African Policeman or Regional Troublemaker" A selection of her books including "Do Not Disturb" will be available for sale in conjunction with Unity Books Wellington (https://unitybookswellington.co.nz) at the event.

Michela will be joined for comments by Colin Keating, the former Permanent Representative of New Zealand to the United Nations, serving from 1993 - 1996 and on the Security Council from 1993 - 1994, present for both the Rwandan Genocide and the mission to Somalia. 

Colin Keating is a Senior Research Fellow at Columbia University and was the Executive Director of Security Council Report, an institution producing reports on the UN Security Council and working to increase its transparency and effectiveness.

Michela Wrong has spent nearly three decades writing about Africa, first as a Reuters correspondent based in Cote d'Ivoire and former Zaire, and then as the Financial Times Africa correspondent, based in Kenya. Previous books include “In the Footsteps of Mr Kurtz”, the story of Mobutu Sese Seko, “I didn’t do it for you”, focussing on Eritrea, “It’s Our Turn to Eat”, an examination of Kenyan corruption, and “Borderlines”, a novel set in the Horn of Africa. Her latest book, “Do Not Disturb”,is a critical assessment of the Rwandan Patriotic Front and President Paul Kagame.
