Description

Meet Karenia.

The South Australian Karenia bloom brought the health of our marine environments and the microscopic organisms within our oceans.

Microalgae blooms occur naturally along our coastline, largely due to the upwelling systems. Most of these blooms are not harmful and in fact are the main source of primary production (i.e. food) for crustaceans and fish, including the tiny copepods that our visiting whales feed on.

Faith will be joining us for the weekend, to be involved in a range of activities. The first will be a practical drop-in session, where participants can bring their own water samples to see what they contain, or look at those Faith will have with her, under a range of different microscopes and treatments. For those who want to learn how to do their own plankton counts, Faith will also have the right gear and methodologies with her, to get you started.
