WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: Learn how to create your own randomly woven basket from dyed rattan cane. Participants will start by learning how to make a basic framework and then fill or extend the frame into a basket with a small handle. The workshop will also include information on harvesting and preparing natural materials.

ABOUT THE FACILITATORS: Branching Out is a collaboration between sister’s Jillian Culey and Carolyn Dance. It is devoted to handmade, fair trade and sustainable creations.
Jillian works predominantly with harvested fibres. She explores and experiments with traditional basketry techniques including twining, string making and ribbed work. For Jillian, weaving is an opportunity to explore the connection between mathematical patterns and nature and her woven pieces take their inspiration from that connection.
Carolyn’s home is nestled in the bush in the Blue Mountains. The
surrounding flora and fauna inspires & informs her creative
practice. Carolyn’s weaving is a meditative process where the
purposeful, slow and rhythmic movements help to transform natural
materials into functional baskets and unique pieces.
