Mighty Indeed - Film Screening + Q&A - 24 & 26 March
Description
"A night of awe, insight, and infectious hope!"
Join us for a screening of the multi-award-winning feature documentary MIGHTY INDEED, followed by a Q&A - TWO SHOWS ONLY in Nelson.
In one of the harshest places on Earth, three women from different generations chase a hidden and ephemeral world beneath the Antarctic sea ice.
Dr Natalie Robinson leads an expedition to McMurdo Sound, joined by PhD student and microbiologist Jacqui Stuart on her first trip south. Mentoring them from afar is veteran sea ice physicist Prof Pat Langhorne.
Battling brutal weather and isolation, the team discovers extraordinary tiny creatures within the delicate structures of the ice. Weaving personal stories with groundbreaking science, this is an intimate and deeply human portrait of life set against the immense scale of Antarctica, told with grit, wit, and surprising warmth.
Antarctic micro-biologist Dr Jacqui Stuart and director/producer Vanessa Wells and will host a half hour Q&A after the screening. They are open to discuss anything (almost!) that you would like to ask. Bring your burning questions - or dive into the making of the film, the science behind it, and what life working in Antarctica is actually like.
**UPDATE: DR NATALIE ROBINSON (Antarctic oceanographer and Director of the NZ Antarctic Science Platform) will join us for the Q&As in Nelson, as Jacqui can’t fly this week (doctor’s orders!). We wish Jacqui a speedy recovery!

We wish Jacqui a speedy recovery! Dr Jacqui Stuart is a Wellington-based marine ecologist whose research shines a light on the tiny Antarctic microalgae that underpin ocean ecosystems. She brings an unconventional background in graphic design and scientific illustration to her science, making complex ideas visually compelling and accessible. After completing her PhD in ecology and biodiversity in 2024, she joined the Antarctic Research Centre, where she combines fieldwork, lab experiments and creative communication to tell powerful stories about a rapidly changing sea ice ecosystems.
