Migration at Europe’s Edge: Perspectives from Cyprus
Description
The ANU Centre for European Studies warmly invites you to a talk by Dr Nicholas Ioannides, Deputy Minister of Migration and International Protection of the Republic of Cyprus, during his official visit to Australia.
Cyprus offers a distinctive vantage point on migration. As a frontline European Union member state in the Eastern Mediterranean, Cyprus stands at the intersection of some of the most pressing migration challenges of our time, from irregular arrivals and international protection to regional cooperation and the reform of the EU asylum framework. Yet, Cyprus’ perspective on migration is also informed by its own experience of displacement and emigration following the events of 1974, whose 52nd anniversary coincides with the Deputy Minister’s visit. This history gave rise to a global Cypriot diaspora, with Australia being home to one of its largest and most vibrant communities.
Dr Ioannides will offer remarks on Cyprus and migration, from contemporary policy to the enduring ties between Cyprus and Cypriots abroad, followed by a discussion with the audience.
