Skilled Migration

Okke Velzeboer, Assistant Director, Business, Industry and Regional Outreach from the Department of Home Affairs in SA will be delivering a session on the skilled migration program, which will include new updates on the recently released Migration Strategy. With a focus on skilled workers in the engineering, hydrogen, agribusiness/agrifood, steel, health and education sectors, Okke will outline ways employers can sponsor skilled international workers to fill critical workforce shortages throughout Australia.

Sean Malone is the Team Leader in the Skilled and Business Migration team within the Department for Industry, Innovation and Science. He will discuss how the South Australian Government works with the Australian Government’s Department of Home Affairs to attract eligible skilled and business migrants through state-nominated visa programs. Skilled & Business Migration also support local South Australian businesses address skills gaps in their workforce through sponsorship of skilled migrants to fill vacancies where there is a shortage of local workers.

PALM Scheme

The Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme allows eligible Australian businesses to hire workers from 9 Pacific islands and Timor-Leste when there are not enough local workers available. Through the PALM scheme, eligible businesses can recruit workers for short-term jobs for up to 9 months or long-term roles for between one and 4 years in unskilled, low-skilled and semi-skilled positions.

The PALM scheme helps to fill labour gaps in rural and regional Australia and nationally for agriculture and select agriculture-related food product manufacturing sectors by offering employers access to a pool of reliable, productive workers. It also allows Pacific and Timor-Leste workers to take up jobs in Australia, develop their skills and send income home.
