Mikelangelo returns to his once upon a time home of Melbourne to play up close and personal at Open Studio. Being a performer who puts so in so much on stage, expect to be sat on, sweated on, and to have your drink stolen, all the while being serenaded by the Nightingale of the Adriatic.

Also known as the Bull of the Balkans, Mikelangelo is renowned for his baritone rumble and croon, commanding stage presence, and rich, image-laden songs. Drawing on transgressive folk music, outlaw country, 50s blues and doowop, spaghetti western soundtracks and instrumental surf music, baroque pop, and the darker side of rock’n’roll, his live performances range from the intimate to the epic and are always infused with energy, emotion and humour.

For this just announced, one-off show, Mikelangelo will be accompanied by Dave Evans on accordion and piano, with special guest Andrew Tanner on double bass. On his trusty nylon-string guitar, Mikelangelo will play songs old, new, and in between, including favourites from his long-term group The Black Sea Gentlemen, and rousing tunes from his other projects such as The Long Lost Friends, The Balkan Elvis, The Tin Star, City of Dreams, and more.

Anushka in the Woods will open the evening with a short set of their surreal, poetic, magic realist songs. The duo is fronted by Mikelangelo’s irrepressible sister and long-time collaborator Anna Simic, who writes and performs with Dave Evans on accordion and piano.
