What is art therapy? Do I have to be an artist to participate?

Art therapy is a healing modality that combines art and therapeutic work. It can be directed toward a specific goal, or it can be a free-form process for insight and relaxation. In art therapy we focus on the process of making art, not the product. The goal is not to have a beautiful piece to hang on the wall, so don't worry if you have no art experience or haven't touched a paintbrush since you were very young!

There is no "right" or "wrong" in the art that we make, and no criticism or grades. Our focus is on gaining insight through self-expression, connecting with others, and hopefully finding some fun and catharsis along the way.

What kinds of things will we do in this group?

We will use a variety of materials, including collage, drawing, painting, weaving, and mixed media. As participants are all SASS clients, we will gently explore themes related to safety, self-acceptance, and creating hope for the future. Each week I will provide a theme or directive for the art, with options for ways to approach the project that will suit different needs.

Tell me about safety and confidentiality.

In our first group we will work together to create guidelines that will form the basis of our group culture. Some of these guidelines will include non judgment of others, practicing confidentiality of What is said and what is made in group, and being mindful of anything that could be triggering to others. I will be supporting everyone throughout the group to use all art materials safely.

Do I have to commit to all eight weeks?

Yes, ideally. The group was designed so you will have the best experience if you can attend all groups. There's something special about group cohesion and support, which can only come about when people are able to attend regularly.

    I have more questions!
You can call SASS at 6231 0044 or send an email to programs@sass.org.au if you have further questions about the group.
