Mindful Matters brings together four arts practitioners in a panel discussion responding to themes in the exhibition, remember the blue sky at DADAA Gallery in Fremantle. The discussion will be facilitated by Julie Barratt, Director of Arts Strategy at DADAA, focusing on art as a vehicle for mindfulness in both its creation and appreciation.

The speakers, Mei Swan Lim, Kobi Arthur Morrison, and Rebecca Orchard bring their unique perspectives, with art practices that encompass sound, visual arts, and storytelling. They invite us to consider mindfulness and intentionally being in the present through the arts, drawing inspiration from place, community, resources, materials, and nature.

The event will be on Thursday, May 30th, from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm at the DADAA Gallery. It's an opportunity to slow down, listen to our speakers, and engage in a discussion with the exhibition, remember the blue sky as our backdrop.

Biographies

Mei Swan Lim - Speaker

Mei Swan Lim is a practising sound designer and visual artist whose work centres on the environmental, emotional and spiritual importance of place, inter-cultural investigation and storytelling. She is also an electronic musician performing and writing under the name Mei Saraswati since 2010.

Kobi Arthur Morrison - Speaker

Kobi is a Bibbulmun Noongar who was born and raised in Perth. While working at the UWA Centre of Social Impact and Propel Youth Arts WA, Kobi spends his spare time playing music and being involved in various music projects such as Koorlong, Koondarm, Madjitil Moorna and Endeavourous, these are projects that earned him the 2018 Perth NAIDOC Youth of the Year award.

Rebecca Orchard - Speaker

Rebecca is an Artist, Creative Arts Facilitator and (almost) Art Therapist, living and creating on Whadjuk Noongar boodja. She dabbles in many mediums, from watercolour to beading, drawing, clay, painting, and textiles, wherever the project leads her. She also makes sounds as one half of the music duo Erasers. Art has been a constant in Bec's life, unable to remember a time she wasn't cooking up a project (usually there are many on the go, all at once). Her creative practice allows her to explore connection to place and environment, often focusing on beautiful details of the seemingly mundane. As she gets older, Bec can see that her lifelong creative practice has always provided a channel for expression and exploration, a place for play and curiosity, a way of slowing down and tuning in, to notice and pay attention to herself, her community, and the environment.

Julie Barratt - Facilitator

Julie is a visual artist and arts producer whose mixed media cross-disciplinary practice encompasses printmaking, photography, artist books, stitching, weaving and installation. Predominant themes in her work lie in narrative explorations of the environment and place histories. Julie’s artworks often include labour-intensive, repetitive, contemplative and meditative elements. She is also a passionate community arts facilitator. She has worked on projects both nationally and internationally in places as diverse as Korea, the UK, Scotland, Nepal and in regional and remote Australia. Currently, she is the Director of Art Strategies at DADAA.
